Utah center Mehmet Okur is returning to his home country of Turkey to deal with an illness in his family. The Jazz said Monday they have excused Okur so he can be with his family. No other details were released. Okur is Utah’s second-leading scorer at 15.5 points per game and has been averaging 6.5 rebounds for the Jazz.

The Nuggets have waived Antonio McDyess, one week after they obtained him from Detroit along with Chauncey Billups and Cheikh Samb in a swap for Allen Iverson. McDyess hasn’t played any games for the Nuggets since the trade.

New Jersey guard Devin Harris has been ruled out of Monday’s game against the Miami Heat because of continued problems with a sprained left ankle. Harris hasn’t played since scoring a career-best 38 points against the Detroit Pistons on Friday. Shocking as it might sound, the Los Angeles Lakers broke out of a shooting slump Sunday night. Shocking because they haven’t lost a game so far this season. Kobe Bryant scored 23 points, Pau Gasol added 20 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots, and the Lakers shot 65.8 percent in the second half in a 111-82 victory over the Houston Rockets.
